Given the unpromising weather first thing in the morning there was a good turn out for the club’s Open Autumn Hunter Trial at Geldeston on Sunday 16th October.
Class 1 – Open 70cm – had a fantastic number of entries. Fence 11 – Cedar Stump was the bogey fence on the course. All the placings were taken by riders producing a clear round with the winner Joe Deane (Ted) completing within the optimum time. Second place and the best placed member went to Kelly Chaston riding Janet Woolner’s horse Brackary Robin on a score of just 8 penalties.
Class 2 – Pairs ran over the same 70cm course and the bogey fence held less fear it appears if you have a mate with you. Cassey Wright (Baggins) and Amy Grimes (Buster) produced a faultless round but were pipped to first place by Sophie Turner (Ruby) and Lottie Basey Fisher (Paddy) who received just 15 dressing penalties but produced a faster time and therefore accrued less time penalties to take first place with a total of 25.4 penalties against the 26.8 total of Cassey and Amy.
Class 3 – 80cms was divided into two sections. Section A was the restricted section. This was an incredibly close contest with both Lottie Basey Fisher (Paddy) and Sophie Turner (Ruby) producing clear rounds within the optimum time. However Lottie was closest to the optimum time so squeaked first place ahead of Sophie.
Section B – Open 80cm was also decided on time penalties but not such a close contest. Dean Pettipierre (Big Hunk of Love) produced a clear round within the optimum time to finish on a 0 score. Imogen Sheldrake (Glenvilla Belle) was also clear but accrued 5.6 time penalties to take second place and best member with member Laura Leggett (Charlie Bear) with a time just 1 second longer taking third place on just 6 penalties.
It was pleasing to see entries for Class 4 – Open 90cm better than at recent competitions this season. There were seven clear jumping rounds from the twelve starters. The first three places went to club members. Steve Small (Midnight Marcel Rae) were just one second over the optimum time finishing on a penalty score of just 0.4 to take first place. Imogen Sheldrake (Glenvilla Belle) finished with just 6.8 time penalties for second place and Connor Sharpe (Tatty) taking third with just 7.2 time penalties.
As always we are indebted to our jump judges for giving up their Sunday to come a sit patiently judging each fence. It is an invaluable service they give free of charge and without them we cannot run cross country events. Similarly a big thank you to Helen Yallop and the naughty cob for collecting the score all day. Thank yous are also in order to the stewards Georgia Cattermole and Andie Getvoldsen, Stella Cattermole and Ann McVicar for helping Jane Powell in the secretary’s tent dealing with the great influx on on day entries. Finally thanks to Bob Reed, Sue and Andy Helliwell who came and helped with the scoring. It was Sue and Andy’s first experience at this task and a sharp learning curve it was for them which they handled brilliantly.
If I have missed thanking anyone for their help today I am very sorry. We do appreciate you but after being shut in the scoring stable I may have missed you.
This was the final outdoor competition for the club this season and we would like to thank everyone for supporting this event. It was good to see some old faces back at a club event either competing or as spectators.
Our next competition is at Humberston EC and is Indoor Show Jumping on 6th November. We hope to see you there.
